Central Spring Open Results

Early in the morning, before the birds had even woke, The Rutgers Sailing Team crawled out of their communal bed, sipped from the same oversized coffee mug, then took the same car all the way to the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club. Jeremy had the aux, and was nice enough to serenade everyone’s ears with the eclectic stylings of Lil Yachty.

Because the regatta wasn’t 350 miles away, we were commuting(!) and able to take more people than in regattas past. It was a great opportunity to give the newer sailors some competition experience. On Saturday, Robert, Taylor, Jeremy, Mona, Anthony, Arul, Elizabeth, Emily R, and Emily P all came along. On Sunday, we were joined by Rob, Taylor, Mona, Anthony, Emily P, Dan, Max, and Weber. Two of these sailors were competing in their first collegiate regatta, but we’re not going to tell you who.

Saturday proved difficult for everybody out there. The wind was steady over 20 knots, and frequently saw gusts up to 30. It was a heavy crew day, which we learned soon after both Emilys were unable to keep the boat down together. After five races, many capsizings, and a particularly nasty puff, the race committee took us off of the water. We finished the day in 14th, beating notables such as Penn State, and William and Mary, who chose to abandon as the first race ended. On Sunday, the wind decided it needed some R&R after working so hard before. Two words: Glass, baby. If there was wind, it made sure to avoid us. I can’t personally blame it. Can you imagine minding your own business, only to have over a dozen tendrils reach off the ground, siphoning your energy for their sick entertainment? Truly, humans are the parasites.

Anyways, we finished the regatta in 17th. But, our priority was to gain experience and the team is now better off for it. When the qualifiers come around, we’ll be ready for whatever gets thrown at us, cause we got the kitchen sink this weekend. And our next regatta is the George E. Morris hosted by Boston University on April 22-23.
